Areas of GMO crops in 2005
GM foods are those that were produced from a modified organism genetically engineered genetically. In other words, food derived from one organism to which they have incorporated genes of another to produce a desired characteristic. Currently have a greater presence in foods such as corn, barley or soybeans.
Improving the species which are used as food has been a common motif in the history of mankind. Native and traditional forms of seed selection and crossing between plants that will improve the quality, productivity and aesthetics of food was for many common and natural selection. But in 1983 the first transgenic plant in 1994 was approved for marketing the first genetically modified food. Many of these foods have been fitted with genes of plants and other species, and its suitability for germination that automatically develop herbicides and pesticides pollute more and more products. In 2007, GM crops are produced in 23 countries, of which 12 are developing countries.
In several countries have emerged groups opposed to genetically modified organisms, formed mainly by ecologists, consumer rights, some scientists and politicians, which require the labeling of these, concerns about food safety, environmental impacts, cultural changes and economic dependencies. Call to avoid such foods, whose production would involve damage to health, environmental, economic, social and legal problems and ethical concept of patents.
